We want you to be healthy.

At the Health team we are here specifically for young people in care to make sure you have access to good health care. We are made up of two nurses and one doctor: Dawn Brook (Nurse), Lisa Munro (Nurse), Dr Caroline de Cates (Doctor)

We also have help from Meg Battersby who is the Sexual Health Promoter - so if you have any questions about sex just ask Meg - her number is 07795 333224

When you are in care you have to have a health assessment every year if you are over 5 and every six months if you are under 5. You will be asked when you last went to the dentist, when you last had your eyes tested and all that kind of stuff. Here are answers to some of the questions about health assessments.

FAQs about Health Assessments

Where do I go?
Your carer or social worker will arrange an appointment for you at your doctor’s surgery, a health centre, your children’s home or elsewhere.

Do I go on my own?
You can go on your own if you like, but if you'd prefer you could take someone with you.

Who will I see?
You can see your G.P or you can ask to see one of the LAC nurses Lisa or Dawn. They will ask you or your carer some questions. You can also ask them questions about anything that is worrying you. For example, health issues, your diet or your feelings.

What are the main things that they will check?
The doctor will check your height, weight, eyesight, hearing and blood pressure. They may need to carry out further checks.

Will I have to get undressed?
No. If the doctor needs to listen to your chest or feel your stomach they will ask you first.

Who is told about my health check?
The doctor or nurse will fill in a form and your health plan will be written. You can keep one copy for your health file. The other copies are kept by your social worker and doctor as a record of this meeting.
